1937 Scruggs 32 Sloop DIXIE GIRL

02 Feb 18:

We came across a picture of the Pensacola sloop DIXIE GIRL in the July 1971 issue of Sailing magazine. The cutter rig and low coach roof caught the eye, and the look of sensible design.

"The easy lines of DIXIE GIRL brought a feeling of calm to a day that would soon be stormy. The cedar planked cutter-rigged sloop was built in 1937 in Pensacola, Florida to a design by Joe Scruggs. The "S" on the main sail is for the designer's name. In 1942 New Orleans sailor Bob Norman purchased the 32 footer and has left a trail of racing victories, including a record passage from New Orleans to Biloxi made in the early fifties." (Sailing, Jun 1971).

The hope was that DIXIE GIRL's design would spark a new lass in the Gulf Yachting Association. We are not sure if that happened or not

DIXIE GIRL competed in several St. Petersburg to Habana races in the late 1930s.

If anyone has information on DIXIE GIRL, please leave a comment below.

Cheers,
Skipper and Clark
